Supporting Community Health

Center for Advancement of Public Health (CAPH)
The Center for the Advancement of Public Health promotes individuals and organizations in their efforts to foster healthy lifestyles. Strategic planning, needs assessment, quantitative and qualitative evaluation, training, and resource services are provided to schools, agencies, and organizations on the local, regional, state and national level. Services emphasize health promotion, drug/alcohol abuse prevention, strategic planning, evaluation, and heightened potential. Primary audiences reached by the Center's services are youth and young adults. The center also assists in conducting research and evaluation on health and safety issues, prepares resources and studies on multiple health promotion topics, and houses an extensive reference library of print and audiovisual materials, primarily on alcohol and drugs. Center for Psychological Services
The The Center for Psychological Services at George Mason University provides reduced fee psychological and psychoeducational assessment and treatment services to the Northern Virginia and Washington, DC metropolitan community. The Center is a training facility for graduate psychology students and a setting for clinical research investigations. The Center includes the Cognitive Assessment Program that provides testing for Fairfax County Public Schools Gifted and Talented program admissions applications under the direction of Dr. Dawna Thompson. Office of Academic Outreach, College of Health and Human Services
The Office of Academic Outreach, in the College of Health and Human Services, provides adult educational services that support the continued professional development and competency of practicing health professionals through partnerships with a variety of local offices and agencies in the healthcare field. Partnership Program in Assisted Living/Senior Housing Administration
A partnership between the College of Health and Human Services and Tysons Corner-based Sunrise Senior Living has produced a model program in assisted living/senior housing administration-the first known curriculum of its kind in the United States. Students learn about the current demographic and regulatory environment, budgeting, staffing, marketing, resident care, and hospitality services. The program also provides an understanding of the principles of choice, dignity, and autonomy that maximize quality of life for seniors. Contact Andrew Carle, 703-993-9131.

School Support for Students with Chronic Illness
Counseling and Development faculty members in the College of Education and Human Development train school counselors, public health nurses and social workers to support students in Fairfax County with chronic illness. Contact Carol Kaffenberger, 703-993-3161.
