Established in 2002, the Arlington Learning in Retirement Institute (ALRI) is a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization that offers college-level noncredit courses, special events, and clubs to help meet the continuing education and social interests of anyone over age 50. Members support, govern, and finance ALRI. Instructors are working or retired professionals from academia, government, think tanks, and private industry who create an exciting learning environment with free exchange of ideas about a wide variety of subjects, ranging from fine arts to science and technology. ALRI is affiliated with Mason, the Arlington County Senior Programs, the Arlington County Public Schools’ Adult Education Program, Sunrise Senior Living at the Jefferson, and the Elderhostel Institute Network. Classes are offered in convenient Arlington locations during fall and spring semesters. Classes meet weekly for one and one-half to two hours and run from 4 to 10 weeks. Membership fees ($55 annually), course registration fees ($45 per course), and donations fund the organization. Publications include seasonal newsletters and semiannual course catalogs. Started in 1991, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) is a nonprofit organization affiliated with George Mason University. Run by a board of directors, an executive director, part-time staff, and members who volunteer their time and services, OLLI offers daytime courses, special events, and other activities for older adults during eight-week terms in the fall and spring, a four-week midwinter term, and a six-week summer term. There are no exams, no college credits, and no college degree is required. Course leaders include qualified OLLI members, Mason faculty, and other knowledgeable persons from government, foreign embassies, and private organizations. Members pay annual dues of $350, which entitles them to attend as many courses, special events, and other activities as they wish, subject to availability of space. Programs are offered at Tallwood House adjacent to Mason’s Fairfax Campus; Lake Anne in Reston, Virginia; and the Mason in Loudoun site. For information, call 703-503-3384.

Virginia residents over age 60 with a taxable income of less than $10,000 may enroll in courses offered for academic credit on a space-available basis without tuition or fees. The Tuition Waiver Form is available in the Registrar’s Office, North Chesapeake Module, Room 1. Senior citizens must be admitted into nondegree status before taking advantage of this benefit. Regardless of income level, senior citizens may audit courses offered or enroll in noncredit courses on a space-available basis without tuition or fees. See the “Senior Citizen Registration” section of the current Schedule of Classes. Call the Registrar’s Office at 703-993-2441 for additional information regarding tuition waivers for senior citizens.
