The English Language Institute offers evening and weekend English as a second Language (ESL) courses on the Arlington Campus. These courses are designed for business people, embassy personnel, prospective graduate students, and other professionals who want to improve their oral and written skills. Students completing the noncredit courses will improve their accuracy and fluency in speaking and writing and will receive a certificate at the end of the course. Bridge Project Summer Institute: This program is designed for ESL students who have graduated from a Virginia high school and have been conditionally admitted to Mason with good academic records but low verbal test scores. The five-week program focuses on developing the students’ academic reading and writing skills and introduces students to campus resources. Call 703-993-3642.
Assessment and Tutoring Services Program: Some Mason students, staff, and faculty who are experiencing academic or professional difficulty because of trouble with English can arrange eight hours of free tutoring. Tutoring focuses on the client’s specific needs and can be arranged to fit the client’s schedule. Call 703-993-3642.
Writing for International Graduate Students: This 12-week noncredit course is designed to help nonnative English-speaking students develop and organize their ideas, sharpen their research skills, document their sources, and communicate clearly in academic English. Call 703-993-3642.
English for Success: ELI offers a number of customized, job-related English language programs for professionals, employees of area businesses, and embassy personnel whose first language is not English. Whether you desire individual one-on-one tutoring or a course for a group of employees, ELI has a program to meet your needs.
